WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE

Rumsfeld defends $90 million spent on Guantánamo

^matthew: 90 million dollars / 520 captives = about $173K/yr each just to keep these guys in a small chain-link cage so that Amnesty International can complain.

lemonodor: "Looking further, I saw that the other end of the cable was connected to the integrated ethernet board. That, my friends, is a hardware-based keylogger."

coderman: "I was invited to give a talk at Google headquarters down in Mountain View last Tuesday... inside, it was all tricked out like a kindergarten. They had pool tables, and inflatable yoga balls, and $6000 electronic vibrating massage lounge chairs, and snack stations deployed at twenty-five step intervals, with lucite bins filled with chocolate raisins and granola."
coderman: "The employees dressed like children. There were two motifs: "skateboard rat" and "10th grade nerd." I suppose quite a few of them were millionaires. Many of the work cubicles were literally modular children's playhouses."
coderman: "I gave my spiel about the global oil problem and the unlikelihood that "alternative energy" would even fractionally replace it, and quite a few of the Googlers became incensed." - 'Yo, Dude, you're so, like, wrong! We've got, like, technology!'
coderman: bwahaha, you can just read the subtext: "how did these asocial geeks get FILTHY FUCKING RICH while my smart ass is in the poor house peddling doom to leftist freaks?"
seti: coderman broke the code
coderman: by the way, pebble bed reactors have all the potential to offset diminishing fossil fuel resources
coderman: and other nuclear power. and alternative energy will become cost effective, so while not making up the entirety or even most of the difference, they will help and be a much cleaner source of energy.
seti: let me guess, you read that Wired issue from a few months back that was basically an ad for the nuclear industry?
coderman: no, id been following pebble bed reactors for a while. the simple fact is alternative energy (non nuclear) is no where close to providing the energy required to maintain even a semblance of our modern lifestyle. it's either nuclear or massive lifestyle reduction. not a lot of choice.
coderman: i'll let you pick odds on which of those two scenarios is more likely
coderman: on the plus side, they continue to make great progress on the space elevator, and that would resolve a lot of the waste issues surrounding nuclear power.
coderman: america tried to dispose of a lot of our nuclear waste via depleted uranium weapons, but even all our wars can't keep up with the backlog!!! bwahaha. (enjoy your child cancer, iraq!)
