The Return of the Body Count

And now for an amusing cartoon to distract you

aminorex:

Cache-timing attacks on AES

coderman: "This paper demonstrates complete AES key recovery from known-plaintext timings of a network server on another computer. This attack should be blamed on the AES design, not on the particular AES library used by the server; it is extremely difficult to write constant-time high-speed AES software for common general-purpose computers."
coderman: another point for crypto primitives in hardware. the via C5J does sixteen rounds of AES in a single (long) instruction.
coderman: your friendly PCI crypto accelerators also have similar characteristics, though you are sending data over the PCI bus at that point.
coderman: good news is that SHA-256 does not use the side channel vulnerable S-boxes
coderman: from wikipedia: "The design and strength of all key lengths of the AES algorithm (i.e., 128, 192 and 256) are sufficient to protect classified information up to the SECRET level. TOP SECRET information will require use of either the 192 or 256 key lengths." - wonder if the NSA was worried about side channels when they required 192/256 bit keys for TOP SECRET?
coderman: don your tinfoil hats!

Under threat of hostage deaths, US releases 21 Iraqi women being held as "bargaining chips"

aminorex: evidently they drew to an inside flush.
aminorex: this is dumb. you're appeasing terrorists! instead, you should kidnap a few dozen MORE women, and some children too.

Candidate #1 in case my wife splits.

aminorex: more of the "uncanny valley" myth.
aminorex: how canny is YOUR valley?

The Democrats are SUCH PUSSIES!

burtonator: No republican would EVER do this!
burtonator: His voice quaking and tears welling in his eyes, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate also apologized to any soldiers who felt insulted by his remarks
^matthew: That's why the Republicans KEEP WINNING: It's because they're unrepentant assholes.
^matthew: And in America, the asshole wins.

New York Senator Charles E. Schumer claims upcoming shooter 25 to Life is an "all-time low" and teaches "Little Johnny" to kill cops.

coderman: does anyone remember State of Emergency? that game was fun.

coderman: wait, why is a hot chick dating couch couch revolution player?

British royals cost $1.12 per taxpayer, palace says

coderman: heheheh, at least our royals get the fuck out every 4/8 years
coderman: ""We believe this represents a value-for-money monarchy. We're not looking to provide the cheapest monarchy. We're looking at one of good value and good quality,"- Use Froogle to find great Monarchy deals!

State censorship alive and kicking in "Western Democracy"

simmo: Carmel Travers (remember Beyond 2000?) had some hard drives smashed up by Australian govt agents who said they do it routinely
simmo: the disks contained uncensored drafts of a book by Andrew Wilkie, a former senior analyst at the Office of National Assessments
simmo: the govt tried to prevent anyone from even mentioning the book had even been censored .. though noone seems to remember anything significant being among the censored material
simmo: Wilkie: ... I think it was intended to send a very clear signal to the media, to the publishing industry, to me that they needed to be very, very careful about criticising the Government.
simmo: Travers: "Don't worry, we're used to this. We do this every day." And I said, "Oh, really? How often have you done it?" "Oh, 70, 72 or 73 times."
simmo: (perhaps he was lying?)

Wireless headset for iPod by Logitech

http://www.hashcash.org/benchmark/

simmo: coderman wanna run some benchmarks using via c3?
simmo: SHA1 breakage not affect hashcash?
simmo: does this mean that c3 and other hardware accelerated crypto doesn't help spammers to generate hashcash?
seti: hashcash is broken by design anyway - spammers have much more resources available than bona fide users.
simmo: agreed but there may be other uses for hashcash than email
simmo: where the trolls probably also have more resources .. but i'm curious

LANDMARK ROUTING IN LARGE WIRELESS BATTLEFIELD NETWORKS USING UAVS

coderman: hah, cool

Wi-Fi used for location services

coderman: this company is using landmark based positioning (kind of like landmark routing) to identify your location based on beacons from AP's nearby
coderman: they are probably just selling access to customers to the AP database, but if they try and patent the navigation/location by 802.11 wireless landmarks i've got prior art from '02
coderman: this works really well in densely populated wireless locations (cities, tech meca's) but very poorly when you've got a sparse wireless deployment, like rural areas / many parts of suburbia

Kid wanted to play video games as soon as they found him
