Intel is going to use VLIW and some russian compiler/interpret crap to radically improve performance

coderman: "Rumours suggesting the cores will be four issue wide sound perfectly reasonable for a VLIW processor. At least two (Hyper)threads will almost certainly be supported but more would require more registers"
coderman: "Intel will now be free to do as it pleases with X86 decoding done in software Intel can change the hardware at will. If the processor is weak in a specific area the next generation can be modified without worrying about backwards compatibility. Apart from the speedup nobody will notice the difference. It could even use different types of cores on the same chip for different types of problems."
coderman: another thing not mentioned in the article is that translation from x86 to VLIW is done via software on multi-core. there is no reason they could'nt also support PPC -> VLIW, which would make Apple's switch seamless and very easy.
coderman: in that light, (support for both x86 -> VLIW and PPC -> VLIW) the apple switch makes even more sense, and the technologies Intel has been pursuing recently much more logical.

coderman: if you are doing point to point, the trick with the old lucent ad-hoc mode is great. it turns off ACK's which improves throughput noticably for long distance links
