Navy Wireless Networks - FIPS 140-2 or Bust

coderman: "Popular small office, home office (SOHO) equipment, such as the Linksys WRT54G Netgear WGR614 and D-Link DI-24 have begun to appear on Navy networks as rogue access points (AP)... this equipment does not meet the Department of Defense (DoD) or Naval Network Warfare Command (NETWARCOM) requirements for wireless usage because it does not provide adequate access control or encryption at link layer 2."
coderman: " In July 2004, the NETWARCOM Network Security Division (NNWC NSD) released two messages that imposed a "wireless moratorium" for both afloat and ashore network infrastructure: ALCOM 038-04 (DTG 021619Z Jul 04) and ALCOM 046-04 (DTG 191834Z Jul 04). This moratorium included but was not limited to "commercial wireless technologies and their derivatives, as standardized in IEEE standards 802.11, 802.15 and 802.16 commercia
coderman: "Red Team refers to a group of subject-matter experts tasked with playing the role of the enemy in training exercises. The purpose of Red teaming is twofold: (1) It identifies weaknesses in the defender’s perimeter that would otherwise be overlooked; and (2) It gives the defenders valuable training in detecting and reacting to attacks.:
coderman: "Special projects can include any or all of the following elements: open source research, port scanning, remote attacks, social engineering, physical intrusion, insider attacks, and malware use and detection."

Driver 'encouraged students to be bullies'

coderman: "A school bus driver has been accused of creating a hierarchy among his preteen and young teen charges that encouraged older students to bully younger ones to keep order." “It was Lord of the Flies with adult supervision,”
coderman: "Cianci also allegedly forced a group of students around ages 11 and 12 to recite a set of “rules” – a 12-tiered ranking system that ended with a proclamation that “Mercy will not be tolerated.” - LOL

End of the Internet predicted

seti: this time by marketers and other associated scum
JFC: the obligatory O NOES!!!!@111!
JFC: I love this one. Because they are saying O NOE NOW WE ARE ALL GOING TAO HAVE TO PAY $$$ FOR THE INERNET ... which I already do
seti: not based on what website you visit, and that's the point here
JFC: well, that's because I have a policy of not visiting pay sites .. which isn't going to change just because some wanker says NOW YOU HAS TO PAY $$$ TO VISIT THE .US
seti: paying the site or paying the transport provider for accessing the site?
JFC: telcos have immoral fee structures. news at 11
JFC: most bandwidth is used by ads
JFC: because ad agencies want 100% metering so defeat attempts to cache their content
JFC: whereas p2p makes maximum use of distributed caching ... lets see who wins
JFC: something about having it both ways ... brings an interesting picture to mind
JFC: ./' hit me with your best shot
JFC: heh. irony: page reloaded automatically, presumably to serve me more ads
JFC: or meter my view
JFC: <mining my data>

"Export" Restrictions, Part 1

coderman: "The standard C++ template export feature is widely misunderstood, with more restrictions and consequences than most people at first realize."
coderman: hey, that sounds like C++ in general!
coderman: export is the antithesis of template inclusion model. inclusion == the templates you know and love
coderman: so inclusion means lots of headers with the defition of said templates, like we're used to
coderman: while export means only declarations (sort of) of templates are provided, and later linked into program code distinct (to define them) rather than both up front like inclusion
coderman: this multiplies the ABI issue, btw, further relegating it from pipe dream status to absolute impossibility. heheh
coderman: btw, regarding build times, i like ccache but would really like a full pre-parsed|compiled headers feature for g++
coderman: i'd also like CORBA stub/skeleton headers to not eat 300+M during compilation. and a pony!

AOL to demand virtual, paid postage-stamps before delivering email you send to AOLers

JFC: to try to reduce spam etc
JFC: Why this might not work
seti: However, the adagium of "Where does an 800-pound gorilla sit down?" applies here - the whole Internet community has been bending over backwards for years to accomodate AOL in their quest to keep their subscribers' mailboxes clean (as opposed to the rest of the Internet, which AOL allows their customers to pollute at will).

Manage LiveJournal sessions!

coderman: so when the cracker hacks your account, he can keep you out while changing your password
coderman: heheh. ok, so this is more useful than not. i just love to point out unintended consequences...

One cool padlock

coderman: "Special, hardened shackle incorporates exotic barrier materials to resist cutting, drilling, and sawing"
coderman: for $1,300 it better be kick ass
JFC: somethingsomething "weakest link" ... for $1300 the thing you chain it to better be made out of the same frigging stuff
JFC: hey! my harley's still here .. but where'd my padlock go... ?
JFC: i like the little loop at the bottom so you can use it as a keyring

Sargent and Greenleaf time delayed safe locking mechanisms

coderman: timed locks run anywhere from $400 to a couple grand

DOD CD Destroyer

coderman: "Capacity: Up to 900 disks/hour Speed: Approx. 4 seconds/cycle Residue: Powder"

Nice Vlog

Damn cool remix vid. Holy cow that's nice compositing.

Interesting new web forum layout idea.

JFC: needs some JavaScript for a hand-icon so we don't need to use the scrollbars, and zoom-in/zoom-out so we can see an overview ... 3rd dimension stacking of boxes would be interesting to try too ..
JFC: and where tf is my reply ... someone already suggested AJAX
JFC: is there a limit on posting length? there probably should be, and long posters can use a url
JFC: <lllllllll> SVG
