Collective wisdom of MetaFilter on good SF reading material

tanheusa: The day after USA Today broke the story that the National Security Agency (NSA) aimed to "create a database of every call ever made" within the U.S., as one of the paper's sources put it, a Washington Post-ABC News poll found that 63 percent of those who were asked said they found the NSA program to be an acceptable way to fight terrorism, and 44 percent said they strongly approved of it.
rik: Remember to call your mom today. The NSA need to calibrate their filters
also: remember all those films where you suddenly discover one day that every second person including your school teacher is a lizardman?
also: that's what this is like.
also: You see, I take these glasses off, she looks like a regular person, doesn't she? Put 'em back... ...on formaldehyde face.

"Sick" Uni building induces brain tumours

also: top two floors closed, panic ensues over atteched mobile phone towers, even though many other buildings have similar towers and seemingly not spates of brain tumours ... or do they?
also: or maybe it's not even the building, but some other common factor .. people who work together for 10 years tend to do other things together too
also: but it's probably not pure chance ... brain tumours hit 1 in 10,000 people .. that's IMPOSSIBLY long odds for five hits in a single floor of a building in a month without some causitive factor
also: "Hotline" maybe not quite the thing to ease the panic ;)
also:
also: but some good may come out of it, with actual planning permission maybe needed in future for mid-size phone towers
also: like council planners are qualified to make radiation emmission surveys on non-understood technology in geometrically complicated, human-infested terrain
also: "Across the state, there are 32 mobile phone towers in hospital grounds, and six in schools."
also: "checked every three to five years to ensure they met radiation standards."
also: "precautionary principle" missing from vocabulary of every text or comment i've read so far on this
also: RMIT was somewhat lax about doing anything
also:
also: the cellular phone masts on top of the RMIT business building
also: "five of the tumours had been diagnosed in the past month alone"
also: someone sack the epidimiologist who said this could be down to chance.
also: give him a job for RMIT business school.
